Sideline support sparks Spartans

RICHMOND – Fans in the stands make a difference when the Spartans are on the football field. They roar when Richmond scores. They are led by cheerleaders. They are led by each other. They are led by each other. “Our seniors get to stand up every Thursday and talk about what they’ll miss and almost every one of them says our community and how strong it is,” Richmond coach Nick Persell said on the field after Friday’s playoff victory. “So many (fans) come out to give support and then (players) get to see them on Saturday morning and are asked how the game was. So, our kids really understand what kind of community this is and they love it.” Richmond is at home at 7 p.m. Friday for the Class 2 District 8 championship game against St. Michael the Archangel, a Catholic high school in Lee’s Summit. “Hopefully, we’ll get a big crowd for the district championship,” Persell said.
