Rockingham Church legacy continues beyond original walls

At a time when rural churches served as both spiritual homes and social centers, the Rockingham Church of the Brethren was established to meet the needs of a growing Ray County community and left a legacy that endures more than a century later. The Rockingham Church of the Brethren was formed in 1897 by families who settled in the Rockingham community after moving from Rockingham County, Va., according to Ray County Museum historian Jarodd Stansberry. Those families brought with them a shared religious tradition rooted in the German Baptist movement, often referred to as the Dunkard Church, which had already established a presence in Ray County decades earlier. The denomination later became formally known as the Church of the Brethren, reflecting an evolution in name while maintaining its foundational beliefs.
