Richmond water line break shows need for upgrades
RICHMOND – One day after city residents had voted overwhelmingly to pay for water line and other related infrastructure work, a major break underscored the reason the city put the issue on the ballot.
Much of the city lost water, requiring schools to dismiss early Wednesday.
Richmond voters approved the issue Tuesday 161 to 96, or 73.11% to 26.89%.
Voters authorized $5 million in new bonds for water treatment plant upgrades to meet current and future needs, concentrated replacement of frequently breaking mains, a comprehensive water loss investigation and replacement of additional mains expected to be revealed by the investigation.
In addition to bonds, the city plans to use more than $1 million in federal assistance provided by the American Rescue Plan Act to add to the water infrastructure improvement effort.
