Richmond softballers impress Maddux on first day of camp
RICHMOND – Watching her Spartans during their first day of team camp, Richmond varsity softball coach Staci Maddux could tell they had honed their skills during their time away from school.
The Spartans did an “awesome” job of drilling as Maddux led them through their paces Monday afternoon at Southview Park, she said.
“I’m very impressed,” Maddux said. “I’m very fortunate that they took it upon themselves during all of this time (off) – that they (have) kind of done stuff on their own. They’ve organized some things up here at the field on their own.”
The Spartans who met on their own “did a lot of batting – mostly just off tees, a little bit of machine work,” second baseman Kayden McCarter said. The informal activities went well, she said.
“Everyone put in a lot of hard work, even without the coaches,” McCarter said.
McCarter is one of two seniors expected to be on the varsity roster this season. First baseman Mykayla Thaxton is the other.
