Richmond Middle School sixth-graders focus on economics

RICHMOND – Richmond Middle School sixthgraders and teacher Murray Dennis attended the Blue Springs School of Economics with several parent volunteers. The students had specific tasks and assignments prior to attending the field trip to get their shops set up. Two tasks involved filling out a job application and writing a cover letter. The job application and cover letter were completed in their English Language Arts class. The job application informed teachers about which job – cook, cashier, designer, bank teller, bank president/vice president, mayor or shop manager – students wanted. Shown models of cover letters, students then wrote a cover letter of their own, based on the type of job they wanted. The cover letter covered four topics: introducing themselves, things that make them a strong candidate, work ethic and qualifications, and a quick thank you to close. Students were taught how to do more job-related activities in their other classes, such as writing checks, counting money…
