RHS Class of 2023 Takes in Baccalaureate

Graduation for Richmond High School’s seniors is now behind them. For the past year these 90 students have faced classes that must be completed and credit requirements that had to be fulfilled, not to mention special activities, award ceremonies and parties. But these young adults have now moved their tassels from the right to the left side of their caps during the recent commencement ceremony. In the middle of these whirlwind days, the graduating seniors were afforded an opportunity to pause and get together to worship at Baccalaureate. Not an everyday word, “Baccalaureate” comes from Medieval Latin bacheleriātus, referring to a knight lacking retainers, a young clerk or a person with an initial university degree. It was first used in 1649. Over time it became the name for the sermon addressed to those earning university degrees, and then also the name of the whole service in which that sermon was delivered, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary.
