Ray County “poor” audit rating – deep dive

The Ray County audit was released earlier this month by Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick and the county was rated “poor.” Within the 27 pages of the audit report, the “Citizens Summary” described eight different findings according to the report, as the following: • Missing money – from January 2018 through December 2020, Ray County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) personnel received $2,549 in concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits and $443 in sex offender registry (SOR) fees that were not transmitted to the County Treasurer and are missing. • Sheriff’s controls and procedures – neither the prior nor the current sheriff adequately segregated accounting duties or performed supervisory reviews of accounting and bank records. The procedures for receipt, recording, depositing, and transmitting money were inadequate and, as a result, there is no assurance all money collected was properly received, recorded, and deposited or transmitted. • During 2020, the RCSO spent at least $5,543 on…
