Ray County looks back to historical women
Celebrating Women’s History Month in Ray County flashes back to the past – presenting Clara (Weary) Chenault and Cleora Dear. Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the U.S. in March since 1987.
Historian and board member Jarodd Stansberry, 32, of the Ray County Genealogical Association at the Ray County Museum researched past women of Ray County.
“My parents graduated from Richmond and Hardin high schools. My dad’s side ran Stansberry Farm & Auto Repair, where 13-Stripes is located now. My mom’s side ran the Farris Theatre in Richmond and the Lentz Station in Hardin,” said Stansberry, who became interested in history while researching his family history.
“History is usually taught in broad nationalistic terms. But knowing your local history can help provide a clearer picture,” he said.
