Ray County Commission unsure whether settlement in national opioids lawsuit will mean county income
RICHMOND – Whether agreeing two years ago this month to allow a law firm to join in the national opioid lawsuit will pay off for Ray County remains unclear following a settlement reached last week between several states and pharmaceutical companies.
“Our lawyers have not contacted us yet,” Western Commissioner Gary Wilhite said. “We haven’t heard anything.”
Presiding Commissioner Bob King said the lawyers who asked to represent the county in the settlement case reached out last week to get the county’s federal identification number. King said Clerk Glenda Powell provided the number.
“We emailed it to them,” he said. “I’m assuming that they’ve got our name in the hat for something, but no one’s said.”
Usually, attorneys are the ones who seem to make out financially in big, multi-party settlements, he said.
“I’m assuming the attorneys will get most of it,” King said.
