Police get body, in-car cameras linked to tasers

RICHMOND – Police officers will use new body and in-car cameras, and compatible T7 tasers, Richmond City Council decided. As a Public Safety Committee member, Councilman Rob Kinnard explained the need. “The software and the technology need to be updated and changed, and these have some significant improvements, one of them being upon pulling a taser, a blue tooth action ...will automatically turn on the camera, as opposed to pulling (the taser) and then having to physically do it,” he said. An officer will no longer need to pause during a possibly dangerous situation to activate the camera. The purchase will cover a body camera for every full-time officer. “That’s good for everybody to be able to document (action),” Kinnard said. City Administrator Tonya Willim said the old system could not support the upgrade. Axon Enterprise Inc., Scottsdale, Arizona, agreed to a lease payment option, with the total price for the equipment over five years coming to $203,000. Axon is a law…
