Partnership helps feed Richmond children
When students at Sunrise Elementary walk out the door each Friday, many carry more than backpacks and homework. Inside their hands are bags filled with not only groceries but also compassion from the community wanting to make a difference when it’s needed most.
For nearly two decades, Sunrise Elementary School-Based Social Worker Julie Hyder has helped lead the effort to ensure Richmond students do not go hungry over the weekend. What began with just 17 food bags has grown into a districtwide project supporting hundreds of families each month.
“I am in my 27th year with the Richmond School District,” said Hyder. “We have been able to send home food with students for the past 19 years or so. We started out at Sunrise, sending home 17 bags of food. Now, between all our schools, we easily send home well over 100 bags of food each week.”
