New K-9 supports deputies, veterans
A Dutch Shepherd named Rowdy will soon become the newest member of the Ray County Sheriff’s Office, offering comfort to deputies, veterans and residents instead of chasing suspects or sniffing for drugs.
The five-year-old dog was introduced during a recent commission session as law enforcement officials explained he would serve as a Crisis Intervention Team K-9.
“His whole role is to give comfort to people who are in stress,” said Rowdy’s former handler in Kansas City Kim Shirley-Williams. “It’s been proven that if you pet a dog or a pet, it kind of lowers your stress level and makes you feel better.”
Rowdy’s background is unusual. Originally trained in Texas as a narcotics dog, he showed skill in detecting drugs but failed to keep the nonstop drive trainers expect.
“This ding dong couldn’t get a tennis ball off his mind to go back smelling drugs,” stated Shirley-Williams.
