MU Extension helps seniors eat fresh

Fresh locally grown preparation took center stage at the University of Missouri Extension’s booth Saturday at the Friends of the FFA Summer Bash. The fresh, easy demonstrations were to highlight the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (MSFMNP) which aids senior citizens purchase locally grown healthy foods from farmer’s markets. Low-income seniors over 60 years of age may be eligible to receive $50 of benefits annually from MSFMNP. These benefits may be used from May 1 thru October 31, 2024, for suitable foods at farmer’s markets or roadside stands with an authorized farmer. The authorized food groups include fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey. Fruits must be fresh and unprocessed, and include apples, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, elderberries, gooseberries, grapes, melons, peaches, raspberries and strawberries.
