Most say no to school mask mandate

RICHMOND – Superintendent Greg Darling – who said Monday he does not like masks – lamented education had just started to get back on track when the Delta variant led to a surge in COVID-19 cases. “We were getting to talk about school again and then here it comes,” Darling said Sept. 10. All district schools have reported COVID cases. “The quarantining and the number of cases at the high school have increased and our elementaries have seen an increase, too, where last year, elementaries didn’t get hit much,” Darling said. Because of reports of the COVID-19 virus infecting people at the elementary, middle and high schools, the Richmond Board of Education called a special meeting Monday to discuss options, but took no action. The Ray County Health Department’s latest report, Sept. 9, listed 99 active cases – up 20 from the Sept. 2 report of 79, or more than 25%.
