Massive battery storage site proposed near Orrick

A high-capacity battery storage facility proposed just south of Orrick could power 100,000 homes for four hours, but residents living nearby say they were left in the dark about the project’s potential risks. During a public presentation to the Ray County Commission, representatives from Mission Clean Energy introduced plans for the White Sage Energy Center, a 199-megawatt battery energy storage system that would operate on 55.5 acres of private land adjacent to the Orrick 161-kilovolt substation along Highway Z. Though construction is years away, the proposal drew more than an hour of discussion as residents voiced concerns about fire hazards, floodplain safety and a lack of public outreach. “This type of development does require a conditional use permit,” stated Senior Permitting Associate Madison Sanders. “We’ve been talking with Stacy and Paula over at the planning and zoning department.
