Local judge visits Sunrise Elementary

A lesson on fairness and citizenship took center stage at Sunrise Elementary recently as a visiting judge used everyday examples to explain how American law was built. Ray County Judge Lori Baskins recently met with third-grade students for a civics presentation, which mixed history, school scenarios and real courtroom explanations to help students understand ways ideas of justice shaped the country. The visit began just after the students finished the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment Baskins noted tied directly to what she planned to discuss. “The very last line of the Pledge of Allegiance, you remember what those words are, with liberty and justice for all,” said Baskins. “Man, I love hearing that because that’s what I’m here to talk to you about. So that was kind of a cool start.” Baskins introduced herself by asking whether students knew what a judge was.
