Liberty defenders could take over Ray County office

Posted in:
RICHMOND – Chillicothe Public Defender Josh Smith and Liberty Public Defenders Corryn Hall and Tiffany Leuty Winningham met with the Ray County Commission to discuss possible office changes. Western Commissioner Dave Powell said Sept. 24 the Chillicothe Public Defender’s Office for now oversees staffing for the Richmond Public Defender’s Office. “They’re having a hard time finding attorneys. They’re always shorthanded and apparently people don’t want to move out in the country,” Powell said. “Liberty has no problem hiring attorneys, so they can dedicate two, if this works out and the cost is all right … public defenders (for Richmond).” Hall said the idea is under discussion, but nothing has been finalized. If the idea becomes reality, then Richmond public defenders would work under the Liberty office instead of the Chillicothe office, Powell said.
