HENRIETTA – A dusty, sun-baked gravel parking lot and rolled razor wire atop chain link fences surround parts of what looks like a metal shed. “It is basically a Morton Building,” Undersheriff Steve Mendoza said outside the Ray County Jail in Henrietta. He steps into the jail’s sallyport. In a typical garage-like sallyport, a deputy would drive into the building, close the door and remove the inmate for processing into the jail population. But not at the Ray County Jail. “There’s no room to pull patrol vehicles in,” Mendoza said. The inmate instead leaves the transport vehicle while outside of the building and is escorted inside, providing temptation to escape, Mendoza said. JAIL TOUR No one questions Administrator Chris Clariday’s conclusion that the former private jail is a lawsuit incubator.
