Public schools are vital. They are crucial for our students, the State of Missouri and the future of our communities. In many rural counties, public schools serve as the largest employer and economic engine. I have had the privilege of working in two Ray County School Districts: Richmond R-XVI and Hardin-Central C-2. It isn’t just their diverse workforce – from custodians to superintendents – but also the local economic impact they have. The crowded parking lots, busy kitchens, familiar hallways, friendly faces and vibrant athletic events attract people from surrounding areas. Public schools truly anchor our communities.
Moreover, public schools provide extensive support services for students, including counseling, nursing and programs for those with developmental disabilities or hearing and vision challenges, as well as nutrition assistance.
