Advocates for sheltered employment programs are actively encouraging the public to express their opposition to a proposed federal rule that aims to phase out 14(c) certificates before the Jan. 17 deadline. Historically, the certificates have enabled employers to pay workers with disabilities subminimum wages, a practice proponents argue is crucial for providing meaningful job opportunities and social engagement for individuals who may face challenges in traditional employment settings. In support of her employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Ideal Industries Director Heather Pugh recently organized the organization’s first community engagement event.
