Most women dread having a yearly mammogram, but the need to be vigilant with screening breast tissue grows each year. Ray County Memorial Hospital (RCMH) has an innovative 3D mammography machine in its radiology department.

Approved by the FDAin 2011, 3D mammograms offer different views of the breast in better detail, higher resolution and allow for changes in breast tissue to be easier to view in dense tissue. The 3D mammogram software enables the radiologist to look over a patient’s past mammograms and current 3D mammograms side by side to identify even minute differences.

RCMH mammographer Nikki Garber RT (R) (M) (BD), has been with the hospital for 16 years and described her work as “rewarding.”

“I feel very close to all my patients, but I have a special connection with my mammogram patients,” said Garber.

Mammograms are considered a preventative screening – generally covered 100% by private insurance. For women who are underinsured or uninsured, RCMH will work with the patient.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and throughout the entire month, there is an international health campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

RCMH’s hologic genius 3D mammography machine was designed to utilize the advanced technology to significantly increase the detection of breast cancer and decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing. This breakthrough technology in 3D mammography helps to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage, when it’s easier to treat.

“We catch the earliest signs of breast cancer,” said Garber about the 3D machine.

RCMH’s 3D mammography machine is considered state-of-the-art. The machine, a Hologic Selenia Dimensions 6000, was purchased December 2018. It takes exceptionally sharp images with a seamless transition between imaging modes. The images can be instantly viewed by the technician, providing fine detail.

October is a great time for women to be reminded to schedule a mammogram. With breast cancer the second most common kind of cancer in women, early detection and treatment are important.
