Few plants can boast the combination of colorful long-lasting flowers and attractive foliage throughout the year, according to Adjunct Associate Professor and horticulturist at the University of Missouri Extension Division of Plant Science and Technology David Trinklein, Ph.D. The florist’s kalanchoe is a versatile houseplant that delivers both, providing a vibrant burst of color during the dreary days of winter. Kalanchoe flowers are known for their flamboyant shades of yellow, orange, red, pink and magenta, which demand attention and persist over time. “Kalanchoes are the Energizer Bunny of flowering houseplants,” said Trinklein. “Their flowers just keep going and going.” In addition to their striking blooms, kalanchoes have fleshy glossy-green leaves with scalloped margins that provide visual interest even when not in bloom. “Kalanchoes really do offer the best of both worlds,” added Trinklein.
