Hall of Famous Missourians includes first female clerk
JEFFERSON CITY – A bronze bust of America’s and Missouri’s first female county clerk, Annie White Baxter, is finally in the Hall of Famous Missourians.
Rep. Peggy McGaugh attended the unveiling ceremony at the Hall of Famous Missourians at the Capitol.
“Annie White Baxter was the first female county clerk in the nation to be elected and the first female elected in Missouri as the county clerk of Jasper County years before women were given the right to vote,” McGaugh stated.
Of the 49 bronze busts in the Hall of Famous Missourians, Baxter is the ninth woman.
“Having served as Carroll County clerk for 30 years and now serving in my first term as a woman in the Missouri General Assembly, I am appreciative of the legacy of women like Annie White Baxter and the suffrage movement,” McGaugh said.
