Missouri Governor Mike Parson hosted the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast last week at the state Capitol. Ray County Presiding Commissioner Billy Gaines attended and participated in the morning event. “The best part was to see people from across the state together in prayer to hope for a better year to come,” said Gaines. “I briefly talked to the governor, but it was a pleasant greeting.” Gaines added the breakfast was in honor of the state’s new year and a way to give thanks for what state and county leaders have done for a better tomorrow, said Gaines. While eating the breakfast foods given, Gaines did get to discuss a mouthful of county concerns he has with many committee members. “I did meet with several committee members to discuss many issues we have with state mandates. The state does mandate what we pay the county’s sheriff, prosecutor and coroner, but does not help cover the cost to taxpayers. Taxpayers cover expenses for state offices in the county.
