Funeral home continues its 100 years of service
As the current owners of Thurman Funeral Home, Bartley and Tonya Willim are preparing for Thurman’s 100-year celebration, set for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 14, to honor the funeral home’s centennial anniversary.
The history of the building and families who have owned it will be discussed.
The business was established in 1922 by Ezekiel and Maude Thurman. The first building was by the Farris Theatre on South Camden Street prior to its current location. The Thurman family owned it for three generations: Ezekiel’s son Levan took ownership in 1947; and later, Bruce L. Thurman, son of Levan, took charge in 1975.
By 2001, Michael Graff had purchased the building and hired Willim in 2007. Ten years later, the Willims purchased the building and continue to run the funeral home.
“It has always been family owned and operated by the people that actually do the work,” Willim said.
