FFA students observe ‘Growing Our Future’ project
Six Richmond FFA Officers gather around Jon Dana, Richmond area farmer and FFA supporter, to learn about no-till farming and cover crops on Richmond R-XVI School District property being utilized in the Growing Our Future field crop project.
High school FFA members learn from the multigenerational farmer, soaking in all he can teach them about no-till farming, cover crops, soybean growth stages and how they can be a part of the process.
During the spring of 2019, the Richmond FFA started a field crop test plot. The idea was introduced to administrators, who granted 8-1/2 acres of unused school property. They then enlisted the help of community members to make the dream a reality.
Jon Dana and Dana Farms graciously donated their labor and equipment to plant, care for and harvest the plot. They utilize a notill method to prevent erosion and improve soil health, among other reasons. Cover crops are planted in between seasons.
