Federal funding opens possibility for more distance learning

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven opened the door to new uses for K-12 education funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. “Our team applied for, and received approval of, a federal waiver authorized under the CARES Act that gives Missouri schools unprecedented flexibility in using the federal ‘title dollars’ they already have to best meet the needs of the students in education during COVID-19,” she said. The new rules mean districts can use title funding for new purposes, including technology infrastructure and teacher training on distance learning, and to use resources where they are most needed, Vandeven said. “We are thankful for the needed funds and for the flexibility,” she said. Some school districts are not as able as others to provide distance learning for students, something from which students could benefit while being forced to stay away from school due to the contagion; in the future, other problems may close…
