Faith with works lives to brighten lives in community

RICHMOND– Faith in action brought members together from two churches to cook and serve Thanksgiving dinner, an annual tradition to usher in the holiday season. New Beginnings and First Assembly of God members united to provide a free dinner to all who came to the Eagleton Center in Richmond on Sunday, Nov. 21, New Beginnings Pastor Phil Powers said. “We feel there’s a lot of people that don’t have family. If you’re a single or a couple and don’t want a big turkey, or some people are struggling, this is a way to help them,” Powers said. The effort involving people from age 6 to adult volunteers is based in biblical teaching, he said. “I am a big proponent of giving back to your community,” Powers, who also heads the Salvation Army Store, said. “The Bible says to give back to others, but some people don’t do it.” There are more than 25 Old and New Testament passages that advocate giving to the poor, including James 2:14-17, which states, “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man…
