Employees and family members were eager to speak against the proposed federal rule which aims to phase out 14(c) certificates – a move that could impact 150,000 workers in sheltered employment positions. Residents are encouraged to voice their opposition to the proposal before the Jan. 17 deadline. The 14(c) certificates allow enabled employers to pay workers with disabilities subminimum wages. Proponents argue the program is crucial in providing meaningful job opportunities and social engagement for individuals who may face challenges in traditional employment settings. Ideal Industries employee Annie Brenneman said she often thinks about the possibility of the workshop closing. “We’ve been here forever, literally forever. I’ve been here almost 19 years.
