Emergency officials offer insight on tornado preparedness

As tornado season approaches, meteorologists and emergency management officials are urging residents of the Midwest to take proactive measures to prepare for severe weather. Understanding the heightened risks is critical. “Knowing your area’s tornado risk can save lives,” said Richmond Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Sowder. “Residents should familiarize themselves with the signs of a tornado, including rotating, funnel-shaped clouds and a roar similar to a freight train.” Considering recent weather patterns, officials recommend residents sign up for community warning systems. Alerts from the Emergency Alert System and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radios can provide timely updates during severe weather events. “Get to know the warning signals in your area, whether sirens or alerts on your phone,” stated Sowder.
