Eagle Scout project turns heads
One young man’s Eagle Scout project is leaving a positive impact. Richmond High School Sophomore Kalvin Spratt, 15, created the “Spartan Pantry and Books” drop-off box in front of Dear Elementary in Richmond.
It is a double drop-off, with two sections, the top for food and the bottom for books. With any dropoff box, you’re supposed to give what you can and take what you need.
The idea originated from seeing the Ray County Library’s book drop off and the Salvation Army’s food drop off on both individual properties. Instead of doing two separate drop-off boxes, Kalvin decided to create a duo drop-off for his Eagle Scout project, he explained.
“It took about a month to make. The wood, plexiglass and roofing shingles were repurposed, and the handle came from my grandma’s. All we had to buy was the magnet to close it and the post to keep it up,” said Kalvin. “I chose to set it up at Dear Elementary because my mom works here.”
