Community celebrates National Day of Service with cemetery cleanup

The Richmond Cemetery received a muchneeded clean-up thanks to the efforts of community members who recently banded together. Megan Pendelton, a passionate preservationist, has returned to her hometown of Richmond with a vision to revitalize the cemetery. Her comprehensive plan involves a five-year restoration project, which will rely on fundraising initiatives and grant applications to achieve its goals. The Richmond Cemetery is the burial ground for several nationally re- nowned figures, includ ing Bob Ford, the man who killed Jesse James; David Whitmer, one of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon; and Austin King, a prominent figure in the history of the Richmond community. Numerous other individuals from the Richmond community are also interred at this historic cemetery. Shelia Bridges, who has been concerned about the cemetery’s condition for years, contacted Pendelton to brainstorm ways to improve the situ- ation. The first step was to clear the vegetation.
