Commissioners accept bid from jail architect

RICHMOND – What seemed a surprisingly low bid for jail architectural service received unanimous Ray County Commission support Monday. The commission received a maximum bid of $5,000 from HMN Architects, Overland Park, Kansas. “It’s pretty reasonable,” Commissioner Gary Wilhite said. “They’ve got a whole lot of reference for jails that they built ... as far as qualifications to do the job,” Commissioner Dave Powell said. County Clerk Glenda Powell said only HMN bid on the project. One reason for the low bid, commissioners speculated, is Sheriff Scott Childers provided architectural plans used to build the Benton County Jail as a basis for what could be used in Ray County, thereby reducing some of the work HMN would need to do. The public will vote Aug. 2 on whether to approve the 1/2-cent sales tax plan to build an $11-million, 110-bed jail to replace the deteriorating metal building in Henrietta.
