Clerk confirms jail ballot language
RICHMOND – Just to be sure, Ray County resident Julie Nelson asked the County Commission to discuss language for the ½-cent jail sales tax issue going on the Aug. 3 ballot.
“We want to know what the wordage is,” Nelson said last week.
In response, Commissioner Dave Powell asked County Clerk Glenda Powell whether the ballot language provided to the commission by Sheriff Scott Childers would be the same language she will place onto the ballot.
Glenda Powell said the ballot would include Childers’ language.
“Nothing can be changed right now. It is a done deal,” she said.
After reviewing the wording, Dave Powell confirmed he believed he had voted to put Childers’ wording on the ballot.
“This is what I thought we were voting on,” Dave Powell said.
Nelson said, when voting to put the issue on the ballot, the commission had failed to clarify it had accepted that specific language.
