RICHMOND – A review of numbers suggests moving some inmates from Ray to other counties, and using ankle monitors for other inmates, could occur. But not cheaply – think roughly $1 million per year. Based on numbers used by Sheriff Scott Childers during the Ray County Commission meeting, 19 inmates from the current population of 50 could be “housed out” at an average cost of $50 daily per inmate. The cost would come to $950 per day, or $6,650 per week, for a total of about $345,800 per year. At $10 per day per ankle monitor, the county would pay $310 per day to provide the service to secure 31 inmates. The amount would come to $2,170 per week, for a total of $112,840 per year. Together, base costs for housing out and ankle monitoring inmates could come to $458,640 annually. Add to that the loss of about $50,000 monthly from inmate spending at the jail, or $600,000 annually.
