Child used as human shield in police standoff

A Richmond mother and son have been arrested after a domestic disturbance allegedly spiraled into a violent standoff involving a kitchen knife, a 3-year-old child used as a shield and the city’s police chief being punched in the face.
Alexander Duchan Miles, 29, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk with no sexual conduct, armed criminal action, resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony and unlawful use of a weapon. This week, he entered a not-guilty plea to the charges before Eighth Judicial Circuit Court Judge

Miles will appear for a bond review hearing at 8:30 a.m. on May 27. As of press time, he is being held without bond.
