Baier keeps the grass greener

The grass might not always be greener on the other side, but it tends to be greener where Tom Baier takes care of it at Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond. Hired in March as the superintendent/head greensman, Baier is from Wayne, Nebraska, and got his horticulture degree, with specialization in turf management from Iowa State University, he said. While at Iowa State, Baier worked at the Ames (Iowa) Golf and Country Club. After graduating from Iowa State, he was hired as an assistant superintendent in Grandview. Before settling in at Shirkey, he was an assistant at the Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City, Kansas, he said. Upon being hired, Baier was excited to be in Richmond and part of a niche history of the golf course, he said. When he started working at Shirkey, he wanted “the members to know” he would be there for them and would work “to help make the golf course up to their standards,” he said.
