Assessor Wollard retires after 39 years

RICHMOND – Ray County Assessor Kent Wollard logged his last day on the job Aug. 31. Wollard did not run for re-election in November and, unlike for other offices, new assessors do not take over until Sept. 1, which incoming assessor Linda Coleman did. Wollard continued working through the morning of the final day of his more than 39-year career in assessing, which included taking a phone call concerning a piece of property in the county. “I was hired in April of 1982,” Wollard said after finishing the call. “I was hired as the county mapper when reassessment had mapping done for taxation purposes. I took the job of keeping all that updated.” In those days, the county worked from paper versus computerized maps. After another 14 years, Wollard won election in 1996 and became assessor in September 1997.
