Allegations of racist, derogatory remarks addressed by board

The Kansas City-based Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts boys’ basketball team faced racist and derogatory remarks last week from a Richmond High student. The remarks were made as the Paseo team arrived at Richmond High School for a game. Feeling they were in an unsafe environment, the Paseo team left directly after hearing the comments and considered rescheduling the game. However, officials said the game will not be played at all. Interim superintendent Dr. Jennifer Collier of Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) schools reached out to the Richmond school district in the form of a letter. In the letter, Collier said the Paseo team was walking off the bus for the Richmond game when a Richmond student used a racial slur while amid a group of students. The remarks were directed at players and were reportedly witnessed by the KCPS administration.
