911 Board hears silence not golden
RICHMOND – Radio woes continue to plague first responders who cannot communicate with each other, 911 Board members heard during last week’s meeting.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Orth discussed deputies having communication issues while dealing with an armed man April 14.
“Last night, we had a situation of a barricaded subject that was threatening to commit suicide,” he said. “The house was surrounded by numerous deputies. They heard the gunshot, but they couldn’t communicate with each other prior to going into the house.”
Deputies entered the house from the front and back, Orth said.
“This sets up a bad situation for possible blue-on-blue shooting – officers shooting each other,” he said.
Officers did not injure each other in the situation, Orth said, but the point is that lack of communication due to inadequate communication equipment presented a danger.
