RICHMOND – In Haley Shelton’s first-grade class, some of her students cannot find a book at their reading level.

That is because there aren’t too many.

“I just don’t have the books at the lower reading levels I need,” she said Thursday.

The Christian Education Committee at the United Christian Presbyterian Church heard through the grapevine Shelton could use some support.

“Some of the teachers have been able to get donations from people they know,” Nancy Wood said. “We heard Haley is a new teacher and she wasn’t getting much help, so we decided to help.”

Shelton came to the office Thursday to see Wood, Julie Gifford and Cathy Barnett waiting for her.

“We heard you are a new teacher and could use some help with your classroom library,” Gifford said. “So, here is a check for $100 to purchase as many books as you can for your children.”
