Phillip Daniel (Dannie) Monroe

Phillip Daniel (Dannie) Monroe died at Life Care Center, Osawatomie, Kansas Friday, Aug. 31, 2018.
He was born May 13, 1941, in Camden, to Esther Strickler Monroe and William (Bill) Monroe. He went to school in Orrick, graduating in 1959. He participated in vocal music and sports. He continued to enjoy music his whole life.
He attended college at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served at Olathe, Kansas and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He worked for Ford Motor Company in Claycomo, Missouri and for the Missouri Department of Transportation in Jefferson City and Kansas City.
Dannie worked at Hydro Conduit Corporation in North Kansas City until his medical condition forced retirement. Following cardiac by-pass surgery in 1997, he suffered a stroke which left him speech impaired, but he was able to communicate with ease. His “goll dang” covered a multitude of meanings and emotions.
He was married to Dorothy Jean Fletcher in March 1954. They had one child. They were divorced.
He is survived by a son, Ryan Anthony (Emily), and his sister, Peggy Monroe Showalter of Lawrence, Kansas, seven nephews and nieces as well as many cousins and friends in the area.
Dannie was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Ruth Monroe Gentry, and brothers-in-law, Paul Kenneth Showalter and Marion Gentry.
A funeral service is at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation is from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond.
Burial will be in the Cravens Cemetery in Camden, Missouri.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. They can be dropped off or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 E. Main Street, Richmond, MO 64085.
