Catherine Jo Coss

Catherine Jo Coss, 71, of Richmond died Friday, June 8, 2018, at Shirkey Nursing & Rehabilitation in Richmond.

Catherine was born Nov. 7, 1946, in Bloomington, Ill., to John Holdbery and Frances Minnie (Spencer) Hume, Sr. She married Ernest “Ernie” Coss of Richmond on Sept. 3, 1988; he survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: one son, Donald (Katherine) Lauf Jr. of Pleasant Valley; one daughter, Fran (Mark) Cox of Richmond; one brother, John (Sandy) Hume Jr. of Davenport, Iowa; one sister, Addie (Donald) Graham of Rock Island, Ill.; four grandchildren, Michael Joyce, Christopher Hughes, Jennifer Lauf and Carol Lauf; and several great-grandchildren.

Catherine was raised and educated in the area of her birth and moved to Missouri in 1981. She attended Terry’s School of Hair in Gladstone and became a licensed cosmetologist. She then owned and operated her own shop, Designer’s Plus, in North Kansas City. This is where she would meet her future husband, while cutting his hair. Catherine later worked for Smurfit Stone Container Co. in Liberty for many years until she retired. She was a member of the Dockery Baptist Church. Catherine enjoyed bowling and the great outdoors.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Dockery Baptist Church or the Dockery Cemetery.

Visitation will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, with memorial services following at 4 p.m. at Dockery Baptist Church. Inurnment at Dockery Cemetery will follow services. Online condolences may be left at
