Jack Allen Bowen

Jack A. Bowen died peacefully on May 14, 2018, in Midlothian, Texas, at the age of 91. This devoted father died at home surrounded by his family.

Jack Bowen was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Gilbert and Lenora Bowen. He had three brothers, Gilbert, Frank and Glenn, and one sister, Betty Martin. Jack was a man who made impacts throughout his life in many ways. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, serving with distinction in the Navy during World War II, spanning from the West Coast to Okinawa. Jack served on the Naval destroyer USS Stormes (DD-780).

Jack, along with his father-in-law, Ed Lewis, operated an automotive service and repair at 331 W. Main St. in Richmond. Lewis died in a boating accident in 1965. Jack became the sole proprietor, and out of respect for Lewis, the business remained Lewis Garage until Jack’s retirement. After retirement, Jack moved to Midlothian with his daughter and son-in-law.

Jack also raised an amazing family with his wife, Betty F. (Lewis) Bowen, who preceded him in death in 2003. Jack is survived by children Tom and Becky Bowen and Jackie (Bowen) Ellis and husband James; grandchildren, Scott and Van Wolverton, James and Lori Atkins, Col. William and Janie Fischer, James T. Ellis, Heath and Jennifer Hall, Josh and Kelcey Ellis; great-grandchildren, Jenny, Kristen, Sophia and James Wolverton, Nathan, Jake and Ava Atkins, Lance Nelson, Peter Fischer, Samantha and Rebecca Hall, and Libby Rey Ellis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack will be remembered by family and friends as a tall and quiet man. His gentle and kind character is something everyone will miss and many will try to emulate. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
