Robert Lee Welker Sr.

Robert “Bob” Lee Welker Sr., 89, of Richmond, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo.

Bob was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Wortham, to Otis and Eva (Yount) Welker. He married Helen Hedgecorth, of Gumbo, on May 18, 1952; she survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: one son, Robert Welker Jr., of Richmond; three daughters, Dana Sutton, of Richmond, Marsha Hoskins, of Richmond, and Angela Clark, of Richmond; 12 grandchildren, April Fescina (Phillip), Dale Sutton (Rebecca), Wendi Welker (Dwane), Monique Welker (Gary), Robert Welker III, Jake Welker, Jamie Welker, Tracie Bradley (Jay), Bobby Jones, Jr. (Beth), Lisa Ferdig (Jeff), Billy Clark Jr. (Ashley) and Jenny Gorham (Patrick); 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters; and son-in-law, Lonnie Sutton.

The Rev. Welker was a well-loved minister for more than 60 years. The past 40 years he has been in the Richmond area.  He was pastor of the First Church of God.   He was a member of the general eldership for the First Church of God in Findley, Ohio.  He was known for his love of God and family.  Robert pulled double-duty working as a full-time butcher at several of the area grocery stores and as pastor of the church in Richmond.  He was a huge Missouri Tigers basketball fan. He enjoyed gardening and he loved fried chicken and bologna, and was very particular about the way his hair looked. He was a selfless person, always putting others before himself. Bob especially loved Helen, his wife of 66 years.

The family suggests memorials be made to the donor’s choice.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at
