Mary L. Atwood

Mary Lue Atwood, 89, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Liberty Hospital, after a short illness.

Mary Lue was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Excelsior Springs, to Asa D. and Estelle (Smithey) Elliott. She married Bob Atwood, of Kansas City, Kan., on June 13, 1970. Bob preceded her in death Sept. 21, 2011.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Lue was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Elliott and Dean Elliott and a step-grandson, Pat.

Survivors include: two stepsons, Michael Atwood and family, of Middletown, Conn., and David Atwood and family, of Marshfield; nieces and nephews, Mary Wiltfong and family, of Missouri, and Susan Elliott and family, and Dean Elliott and family, both of Colorado.

Mary Lue enjoyed the relationships with many of her relatives from several Ray County families and especially cherished the affection of Melinda and Vern Smithey of Camden.

Mary Lue was a legal secretary for many years.  After retirement, she enjoyed working with the genealogical society, and the Ray County Museum and Genealogical Library. Mary Lue was a board member for Cravens Cemetery, and served as secretary for many years.  In past years, Mary Lue and Bob could be found at county and local festivals with their woodcrafts. Mary Lue was a long time member of the Friendship Baptist Church. In recent years, Mary Lue attended Orrick Christian Church.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Cravens Cemetery.

Friends and family will gather from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. A celebration of Mary Lue’s life will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Cravens Cemetery on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Online condolences may be left at www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
