The Lenten season of fasting, repentance and self-examination began with the imposition of ashes on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter – a celebration of the life, death and resurrection of Christ, by observing a period of fasting, spiritual discipline, repentance and focus on Jesus and His teachings.

Growing up in the Episcopal faith with my father a minister meant we observed the Lenten season as that denomination decreed.

Lent would begin with Ash Wednesday when the palms left over from the previous year’s Palm Sunday were burned and used for ashes to be applied to the congregants’ forehead by the minister.
