Lady Spartans hold off West Platte

The defense of the Richmond Lady Spartans helped boost them to a 16-point lead and then came up big down the stretch as they got past West Platte 44-36 Wednesday night in the consolation semifinals of the Lawson Invitational.

Richmond improved to 3-11 with the victory as the defense allowed just three Lady Blue Jays to score. The Lady Spartans grabbed a 17-9 first quarter lead with West Platte hitting three 3-point buckets for their only scoring. Lea Moose hit a pair of treys and Karen Knox added one more, but coach Brandon Quick said the Richmond defense adjusted to take away the long ball.

“That was the key,” he said.
