Author with local roots twists reality into end-of-world tale in his 13th book

Truth turned into fiction is stranger than either truth or fiction.

That’s the kind of world Jason Offutt creates when he starts with an ant-killing fungus – the true part – and turns it into a post-apocalyptic world populated not by zombies but by the walking dead, and, more

importantly, by the survivors of the catastrophe.

“I had the idea of writing a zombie novel without any zombies in it,” he said, adding that his novel, “Bad Day for the Apocalypse,” imagines a more complex concept: how real people would interact as society collapses after a catastrophic event.
