After nearly 38 years at Ideal Industries, Bob McCorkendale is retiring.

McCorkendale began working for Ideal Industries when the shop opened with just eight employees in 1980 on Wollard Boulevard. Today, the shop on North Thornton Street employs nearly a hundred people – basically his extended family to him.

And although his first day of employment was Jan. 2, he’s planning to retire several weeks after his 38th anniversary. His last day as director is Feb. 27, 2018, a special date in his heart.

“There’s a reason for that,” McCorkendale said, adding that he and the manager of the shop at the time spent the first few weeks gathering information about other shops and how to operate the new one in Richmond. “Our people actually started Feb. 27 of 1980, and I had eight employees, four of which are still here.”
